So, picture this: you’re cruising out of Cabo San Lucas, sun on your face, breeze in your hair, and excitement bubbling up inside you like a kid on Christmas morning. Yep, that was me a few days ago, on a whale-watching adventure, one of the coolest experiences Cabo San Lucas has to offer. It is a must-do for me every time I am there during whale season. Join me as we explore the wonders of Cabo’s marine world and get up close and personal with some of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures.

Discovering Cabo San Lucas

As many of you know, I love Baja and all it has to offer! Before we jump into the deep end, let’s take a quick peek at what makes Cabo San Lucas so special. Think sun-drenched beaches, dramatic cliffs, and waters so clear you’ll want to dive right in. This place is a paradise for anyone who loves the great outdoors and ocean. It is an adventurer’s playground. And trust me, you’ll want to spend as much time here as possible. Every season has something different to offer on Land & Sea!

Whale Watching

The Ultimate Thrill: Now, let’s get to the good stuff – whale watching! Cabo San Lucas is like prime real estate for whale enthusiasts, especially between December and April. That’s when these big guys – humpbacks, grays, blues, and even orcas – come out to play in the warm waters of Cabo’s coast. The humpbacks were putting on a show this trip with acrobatic breaches, spy hops, and tail slaps. I was fortunate to watch a mom teach her baby how to breach, and what a show it was.

When to Go

If you’re itching to catch a glimpse of these Humpback superstars, plan your trip between January and March. That’s when the whale action is at its peak, and trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Gray’s can be found up the coast in San Ignacio and blues in the Sea of Cortez.

Booking Your Tour

Now, let’s talk logistics. There are plenty of whale-watching tours in Cabo San Lucas, but I highly recommend a few specific experiences.  The first is a whale safari day trip with a tour operator I’ve had the pleasure of working with for the last three years. Some of my favorite experiences have come off their boat!

There are multiple-day options that include glamping in San Ignacio for up close and personal interaction with grey whales. The Pacific gray whales migrate home to Baja, and San Ignacio is whale central, with 5,000 to 6,000 whales visiting the lagoon between December and May.

Or, you could experience all three types of whales with a full-on whale Safari that traverses Cabo, Magdalena Bay, and Loreto for the ultimate Whales of Baja Experience Expedition.  Most tours depart from the marina and head out into the big blue, where their expert guides will help you spot whales and share all kinds of cool facts about them.

Meet the Whales

So, who exactly will you meet out there? Well, for starters, there’s the humpback whale—known for its acrobatic displays and haunting songs. Then there are the gray whales, who make one heck of a journey from the Arctic to breed and give birth in the warm waters of Baja California. And let’s not forget about the blue whales, the biggest animals on the planet, or the occasional appearance of orcas, aka killer whales. My first experience with Orcas was mind-blowing in the Baja waters where the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean meet.

Weather

Cabo is great year-round, with most of the rain coming in September and October each year.  Outdoor air temperatures average:

Ocean temperatures vary quite a bit between winter and summer.

  • From January to March, the water temperatures in the Sea of Cortez tend to be cooler, ranging from 66 to 72 F.
  • From April to June, they begin to warm up and range from 72 to 78 F.
  • July to September brings the warmest water temperatures to the Sea of Cortez, ranging from 78 to 84 F or even higher in some areas.

From October to December, the water temperatures gradually begin to cool down and range from 72 to 78 F.

Why?

All in all, a whale-watching adventure in Baja is something you’ll remember forever. Whether you’re a seasoned whale watcher or a first-timer, there’s nothing quite like seeing these majestic creatures up close and personal. So, what are you waiting for? Pack your sunscreen, grab your camera, and plan some whale-sized memories in Cabo!
